NEW.S Roundup September 2024

Whether you like it or not, change is happening. Everywhere, all the time. How we face change — do you dive in headfirst, or are you more cautious or even risk-averse? — matters. As you can imagine, we're part of the former: Whether we’re reimagining how we think about waste or finding creative solutions for lasting sustainability, we never seem to run out of ideas for change.
That’s a good thing because, for us, there’s a certain magic in starting new projects — the uncertainty but also the possibilities that haven’t yet been fully discovered. Now, we’re about to enter new territory by fulfilling one of the first promises we made ourselves after founding NEW STANDARD.S: “If we see the solution to a problem but there’s no client willing to take on the challenge, we’ll do it ourselves.” That‘s the kind of entrepreneurial spirit — the willingness to tackle change — we need to face the urgency of the poly-crisis we’re in.
Kreisler: A Circular Revolution in Action
Exciting times are ahead with Kreisler, a project dedicated to building a circular economy infrastructure where it matters: for the people, by the people. We are setting up a local community-supported and -run shop for repair and rental in Berlin’s Plattenbau quarter Gropiusstadt. While we dedicate some of our resources to the project, it won’t run entirely under the umbrella of NEW STANDARD.S. You might say it’s our first spin-off... Being aware of our current economy's systemic issues, we need to critically question power and ownership. Kreisler as a community-owned, non-profit-driven, and open source solution is a step in this direction.
Do you happen to know somebody in Berlin active in the repair scene or who has the skills to repair electronics, textiles, or anything else? We’re looking for them to join our adventure.
We’re thrilled to announce the kickoff of our latest project in Berlin Neukölln, Null Müll Neukölln. This initiative is all about rethinking zero waste in one of Berlin’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Through community engagement, new waste reduction strategies, and a silo-breaking cooperation within local administration, this project aims to transform Neukölln from “bad boy” to model student in terms of circularity and zero waste.
We are just as happy about our own successes (like being a finalist for this year’s German Sustainability Award) as we are about the successes of our clients.
A current example: Our many years of work in sustainability strategy and communication for our client Montanwerke Brixlegg AG have not only changed things internally but are also bearing fruit externally. In the current INDUSTRIEMAGAZIN ranking, the copper upcycling company is ranked 2nd among the most sustainable industrial companies, 7th among the most innovative companies, and 10th among the strongest B2B brands in Austria.
We strongly believe in sustainability as a driver for businesses’ success — which in our view doesn’t need to be growth, but innovation, reputation, and continuous improvement.
