NEW.S Roundup July 2023

Have you spotted one of the ads trying to convince people that single-use packaging is good? McDonald’s advertises how they make books from their used drinking cups. LIDL hired the popular entertainer Günther Jauch to promote the sustainability of their single-use bottles while simultaneously starting the initiative #NoSilverBullet to lobby for why policymakers should refrain from a reuse quota. (Fun fact: Using “bullet” blacklists their hashtag on social media, which makes it impossible to start a shitstorm under the same hashtag. Smart, isn’t it?!)
Big corporations have their hands full trying to convince consumers not to worry about reuse systems. It’s all thanks to the upcoming passing of the refined draft of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which is part of the EU Green Deal. Big corporations are doing everything they can to have the reuse quota removed, which would actually reduce the amount of throwaway packaging but also require them to change their processes significantly. Which, of course, costs significant amounts of money.
#rEUse – anti-lobbying campaign
To take the wind out of the single-use lobby’s sails, we designed an explanatory video for NewERA that concisely explains why reuse is the future – and what role recycling plays. This way, we inform national decision-makers throughout the EU and in five languages about the advantages and the enormous potential – and give them a clear call-to-action not to further water down the planned reuse quotas. Reusable is not a utopia but an innovative and sustainable business model that benefits us all!
In May, our co-founder Nika participated in the official B Lab training to become a B Leader. She can now support companies during their certification process. Does your company want to become B Corp certified? Don't hesitate and book a workshop.
Are you in need of design or want to have us create your first impact report?
Our beloved and very talented former intern Svenja is moving back to Berlin and starting her first “real” job as a designer at NEW STANDARD.S. (Yes, she was so good, we asked her to come back!) Having her (re-) join our team means we’ll have additional resources for new design projects. If you know of sustainable companies needing campaigns or rebranding or newly formed startups looking to shape their brand, please get in touch.
Additionally, in 2023 we have resources for two more impact and sustainability reports for those who’d like to get ahead of legal requirements and start their GRI-conforming reporting journey with us.
